Art Appreciation

I love teaching my students about famous artists!  They get so excited to learn about new artists every month, and it makes me so happy when they remember the artists they've learned about months or even years later.


I create my K-8 Art curriculum by first planning what art concepts and skills each grade level should be learning. I then consider which great artists from the past and present will help demonstrate those age-appropriate concepts and skills.

Every class from Kindergarten through 8th grade learns about a different "Artist of the Month" every month.  I designate one "Art Appreciation" day each month to focus on art history and these artists.  

I use PowerPoints to teach all grades about these artists.  Each artist PowerPoint includes a short student-friendly biography of the artist and several slides of their artwork.

To help them understand and remember the artist, Kindergarten and 1st grade students write the artist's name and create a little picture on a worksheet.


Students in grades 2-8 take notes about these artists on a more detailed worksheet or booklet.  I have versions suitable for both younger kids and older kids.  This FREE worksheet can be found on my TPT store.

    20 Great African American Artists

    Black History Month is a fantastic time to spotlight some inspirational African American artists! These artists have all made important contributions to the art world. Some of these artists also use their art to express the social and political realities of the Black experience, giving viewers a deeper understanding of Black history. Black artists have historically been underrepresented in art museums and publications. It's important to recognize these artists and teach others about their art and achievements.     Impressionist Landscapes

    These landscape watercolor paintings inspired by Claude Monet and the Impressionists are sure to bring calm to your classroom !   When going outdoors to paint "en plein air" is difficult or impossible, 6th graders use photos for inspiration for these landscapes.  They focus on mixing bright, vivid colors and create their paintings one brushstroke at a time! Step 1:  Introduction and Drawing Show Impressionism paintings, especially those by Claude Monet.     Students are amazed by African American artist Kehinde Wiley's incredible talent, and they are drawn to his contemporary style.   Inspired by his work, 7th graders created these realistic self-portraits overlapped by patterned backgrounds.
